Lifes Journey: by Mysto Caindren
In the darkness I stand at the crossroads, my journey ahead insecure. I have lost my map, and know not whether to go on or turn back. Behind me lies the forgotten days of old, when young children used to run and play. To my left lies the bridge, which leads on to a strange new world where I may find greatness, yet lose all I had gathered in this land. To my right lies the road we were to take in life to find an everlasting peace; a peace which dodges from my grasp, playing me for the fool.
In my home land I lived free and merry. All which I needed was provided, and all that I asked for was given. I was sheltered, and tutored, and protected from peril. In my eyes my home was a palace, and my parents were king and queen. I myself lacked nothing, yet at times while standing by my window above the streets I would see others living insolvent and despondent. Then one day I was told I would have to go, to go and establish my own rank in the land. When asked Why? they replied, All birds must spread their wings and fly. Thats how things are meant to be.
I took all I had, and said my goodbyes. I left my home of the village of Youth, and took the path which leads to the city of Adulthood, where all men and women go to create a life for themselves. While traveling down the road, I came across others who were making the same pilgrimage. Some were kind, and others were cruel; some were among the best of friends, yet one stood out among the rest. When I stumbled and fell along the side of the path, she came and lifted me up. Her name was Athena, and true to her name, a goddess she was. With the pen she stirred and controlled others emotions, and the music she made brought joy to the hearts of all who heard. Through her I was enthused to do the same. I enhanced the stroke of my pen, and my hands adjusted quickly to the keys of ivory and ebony. In all that I did, I aspired to be like she. The support she gave helped me to grow and to strive, and she made me the best I could be. For seven hundred days and more we would cross similar paths, until one day I said, Dear Athena, though the trails ahead are vast and numerous, I propose that we remain in mutuality. Let us be in concert until the end of our time in the mortal realm. Aye, said she. We shall be together forever, for that is how it is meant to be.
Eventually there came a time where the paths did split, and we were forced to separate, if only for a little while. Go on ahead, she said. We shall meet again at the crossroads of ten and eight. From that point on we shall never separate. We bid our farewells, and hurried along so that we would soon be joined again. In two weeks time I reached the station by the crossroads, where I would wait for Athena, my love, my life. Two weeks more I waited, and not a sign of her did I see, until a letter came addressed from her to me. In the letter I read some news which I dread. She had become ill along her travels and the chances of her return were slim. Yet still I waited, knowing full well that entwined were our fates. A few days passed and another letter came, bearing news which brought forth from my heart first joy, and then shame. Healed she was, and ready her trip to begin. Yet while she was gone, another man came who asked that she abandon me and travel with him. Im sorry, her letter said to me, Friendship we shall forever have, but our lives were never meant to be.
I left the station that night and began my journey to the crossroads. I looked neither left nor right, for to me the world was dead. Soon I had lost the will to move ahead. I am lost! I cried, and again I fell to the side of the road. This time, however, instead of one angel coming to lift me up, God sent forth a multitude. Together they worked to heal and cure me. Despite the ill manner I gave in return, they knew that for love was all I yearned. To them I shall forever be in debt, for they showed me life when all I saw was death. In the darkness I now stand at the crossroads, my journey ahead insecure. I may have lost my map, yet I doubt that I shall ever turn back. Standing here with me are Athena and all my friends. I turned once more to my companions and said, Now I know that though separate roads we shall take, none shall we ever forsake. In the end we shall all be together; living happily ever after. For that, my friends, is what is meant to be.
